Helen was born to Josef Hotek and Frances Vinchattle on their family farm in Otho, Iowa, April 9, 1905, the youngest of nine children. She shared many a story of "back on the farm" with us which had her rising early to complete chores before school, walking miles in the snow, cooking for farm hands, learning to crochet, sew, quilt and tat. These talents benefited all who knew her as we treasure her handmade gifts.
Helen attended a one room school house, graduating in 1923 where she played girls basketball. The team made their own uniforms which consisted of black bloomers, white blouses and black ties.
For a graduation present she received a round trip train ticket to Hollywood, CA and quickly fell in love with the area. She cashed in the return portion of her ticket and settled here.
She landed a job at Bensons Hosiery's and began filling her spare time with lots of dances, trips to Catalina Island, adventures in the Mountains, and days at the Strand.
Helen met the love of her life, Frank, whom she married on January 1, 1938. They made their home in San Diego, CA at that time. When their daughter's came along, they moved to La Mesa where they operated Mort's Market along with Frank's father, Otis.
Later they moved to Pacific Beach, where the daughter's attended school and Helen became involved with the PTA, girl scouts, Job's Daughters, swimming lessons and dance lessons. Helen sewed many a costume and later the girls prom dresses. Her activities included Past President of the Ladies of the Elks, Pacific Beach garden club and helping all the organizations which her daughters participated in. She also worked at their plastic business, running the office.
After her husband's passing, she became very involved in an aerobics program for seniors at her apartment in University City. She was able to do push ups and would show us her strength and agility even in her "old age". She joined the women's club and became very active in bingo, card playing, pot lucks and dinners.
With her talents of sewing, crocheting and tatting, she chose to donate her blankets, booties, caps and sweaters to the preemies at Scripps Hospital for which she was recognized. She said it kept her busy and smiling.
Helen's life was full, right from the start, surrounded by a loving, hard working family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and dear friend who will be greatly missed by all.
Helen is survived by her two daughters; Mary Weinbrecht and husband Bill, Frances Greathouse and husband Roy; three grandchildren, Sheri Rathor and husband Toki, Mark Weinbrecht and wife Kim, Ray Greathouse; four great granddaughters, Amanda Weinbrecht, Sabrina Rathor, Alyza Rathor and Sophia Rathor. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Frank L. Mort in June of 1989.
A celebration of her life will be held at Pacific Beach Chapel, 4710 Cass Street, San Diego, CA 92109 on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations be made to your favorite charity in Helen's name.

</line>
</metadataxml>
