OBJE:_DSCR	Erwin Fanta served as a 1st Lieut. in the US. Army, Second Division, Co. B, Supply Train. His father (Alois J. Fanta) kept all of his war letters and they still survive today. A.J. occasionally shared some of these letters with the Manitowoc Daily Herald and the stories were printed, such as this article from the 6 Jul 1918 Manitowoc Daily Herald.

Erwin Fanta, son of former Alderman A. J. Fanta, now in service with the American troops in France, and whose letter to his parents last week, told a thrilling story of his participation in the recent west front fighting, where the Americans stopped the Hun advance toward Paris. It was the United States division of which Lieut. Fanta was a member that stopped the German push. Lieut. Fanta is shown in the uniform of the overseas service, which is somewhat different from the uniform worn by American officers when leaving this country for overseas service. In his letter Lieut. Fanta apologies for the appearance of the uniform in the picture, which he says has seen much hard service. Lieut. Fanta reports putting on weight since leaving America and the picture bears out his statement. He says the food agreed with him, and he writes confidently of the Americans, and their ability to turn the scale of victory in the great world war in favor of the Allies. </transcription></metadataxml>
